Well, there’s a first. A completely trouble free experience from Hertz.
I was sure we would have problems. After all, I’d managed to squeeze a ridiculously low rate out of Hertz for the Chrysler Grand Voyager, so I was fully expecting to find that “Sorry sir, we don’t have the car you booked available”. But it was. And it was almost new. Well done Hertz!
How was the Chrysler Grand Voyager? Well, it was actually a heap of junk! Harsh? Probably. Would I buy one? Not on your life! Would I rent one again? Oh, yes. That may seem a little at odds, but in fact the Grand Voyager was perfect for the job. It took all seven of the “Javea Hillbillies”, and their luggage, easily. But it drove like a bad old transit; it had plastics I thought hadn’t been used since the eighties; it didn’t have an accelerator - just a loud pedal (put your foot down and it just got louder, not quicker) and I’m not sure the steering wheel was connected to anything remotely resembling the wheels! But it seemed to use no fuel at all, the aircon worked a treat and the electric doors were fun (for the first day!). So as a holiday rental it was just fine and dandy.
I do love a holiday, but I do hate the ‘back to work’ bit. The body is here but the brain’s still by the pool. It was hard to come back. The Villa was great (many thanks to my new best friend Richard at Posh Villas for such a great house!), the weather was hot and sunny, and there was an obscene amount of food and drink imbibed by one and all. Just perfect. The only downside was the broadband in the villa not working - so I couldn’t work at all. Oh what a shame. But it was very weird - I think that week is the longest I’ve been a way from a computer in 5 years, and the brain is finding it hard to put anything sensible together, so apologies if this post is a little incoherent.
Ryanair wasn’t quite as shabby as I’d expected - but they do like to squeeze the extras out of you. A small fortune for excess baggage on the way back, and everything from a cup of coffee to a lottery ticket touted from beginning to end. But the flight was on time both ways, and it was cheap. And for a short hop to the Costa Blanca you can put up with anything if the flights are on time. So much to my amazement I would recommend Ryanair and a Grand Voyager from Hertz. And I never thought I’d be saying that!
Back to normal soon with lots of car tests upcoming and new additions to the site. Oh, and I’ve got a holiday to pay for, so please buy a car (or three!).
