Gumpert Apollo for sale. Not a phrase you would necessarily recognise as a desirable offer. Gumpert? What on earth is a Gumpert?
Roland Gumpert was Audi’s Quattro Maestro, responsible for the devastating Quattro cars of the 80s. He went on to forge his own company and, thanks to the close links with Audi, brings the Gumpert Apollo to the world.
There are many parallels between the Gumpert and the Zonda. The Zonda’s development owes much to the close relationship between Horacio Pagani and Mercedes. And the Gumpert Apollo would only have been possible with Audi’s input. Using an Audi 4.2 V8 with twin turbochargers, the very light Apollo offers jaw-dropping acceleration in something akin to a street-legal Le Mans car.
There are three versions of the Apollo available: Apollo, Apollo S and Apollo R. But it doesn’t matter which version you choose, you are going to have the most incredible experience of your life in a road car. This isn’t a cosseting Supercar, this is a race machine. No deep luxury and techno-frills. Just pure, raw power. Don’t expect a posing cruise to Waitrose to do the shopping, this is not a cruising machine. But if out and out thrills are your cup of tea, it doesn’t get any more thrilling than this!
With a sequential gearbox (oddly, needing the clutch not just to get moving, but for every gear change) the Apollo feels from the off like a road racer. 3 Seconds 0-60. 690bhp. 679 lb ft of torque. 220mph. The figures don’t do it justice. It feels so much quicker tha a Zonda or a Koenigsegg. Maybe it’s the lack of frills. Maybe it’s the whole ‘Race-Driver’ feel you get. Whatever it is, the Apollo makes the adrenaline flow like nothing else on the road.
You’re not going to see the Apollo on every street corner. You’re not realistically going to be able to use this as your every day car. But if you are looking for one of the biggest road-legal thrills on the planet, the Gumpert Apollo fits the bill perfectly.
